The Huawei P8 with the test with its sleek and stylish aluminum case at first sight clearly: in the drawer “Cheap manufacturer” Huawei no longer belongs.

The many details that it constitutes at the closer look about the fine grinding of the frame or the ridged surface of the power button, show rather: Huawei moves with the P8 on par with design icons such as the iPhone 6 (test) and the HTC One M9 (Test).

The Chinese Telecommunications giant, which is one of the largest network equipment manufacturers and Smartphone producer, manages even to outplay the two opponents in one aspect: the camera lens does not extend out from the back, but plan is integrated into the interface.

Handling and processing

The very angular shapes of the Huawei flagship however ensures that it is not particularly ergonomic hand – but it’s criticism on the highest level and ultimately a matter of taste. Those who are interested in the P8, should try just the Smartphone before buying.

The almost perfect workmanship is undisputed. So the two slits for nano-SIM and Microsd milled on the right side in the framework of card holders are closed, that exactly match up to the tenth of a millimetre. Almost one wonders that the case is not waterproof according to IP standard, but it has failed then but Huawei.

The housing can keep up so readily with the top models of famous brands. But what about the equipment? The screen, everything’s fine: Huawei sets on a 5.2-inch Panel with 1920 x 1080 pixels – a resolution that is sufficient to this size. Brightness and contrast values are located with 436 candela and 1:1450 in the upper midfield.

The processor is also beyond all doubt: the new development of our own production goes by the name HiSilicon Kirin 930 and brings eight cores, that after the big. LITTLE principle of ARM in two clusters are grouped together and work on different levels of performance. This ensures a high energy efficiency and at the same time a strong performance. Facing the lush 3 GB are the 64-bit CPU memory – more I can’t at the moment. Intensive users and gamers will be satisfied with what offers Huawei here.

A special highlight is the 13-megapixel – camera, which plays in a League with the iPhone 6 and S6 of the Galaxy and also brings a variety of special shooting modes. For example, the mode of “Light painting”, where one can live in dark environments in the camera preview, as the appearance in a long exposure is unique in this form.

Radio equipment

Connection range of NFC over Bluetooth 4.1 to LTE cat 4. Everything important is supported in principle, but look more closely and missed then a few things. Most importantly the reduction of the Wi-FI Department: it lacks not only the fast ac standard, but the complete 5-GHz band. The P8 dominated only 2.4-GHz-WLAN. Also premium interfaces such as for example qi to the wireless recharge (does the Galaxy S6 (Test)) or infrared (offers the one M9) are missing. Stereo speakers are not included also, which is however bearable, because the speaker on the bottom produces an amazingly good and clear sound.

The latest Android version 5.0 is installed on the P8, which guarantees a frustration-free use in conjunction with Huawei’s user interface EMUI 3.1. The Chinese follow Apple’s iOSoperating structure: The usual Android app drawer, which collects all the apps in a separate menu is missing. Instead, they are stored as the iPhone directly on the home screens.

The surface like that but mainly due to their modern layouts. The finely drawn fonts and symbols look fresher and more modern from Virgin as with Google’s Android.

The comprehensive customization options, clearly cooked up in the app “Designs”, and the control options for apps in this depth allows no other smartphone manufacturers are also strong. So, the user can specify which app should be closed or continue in the background may remain active if the display is deactivated.

Just as it is possible to define whether and how an app connects to the Internet (WI-FI or cellular) and informed about new events as they (status bar or lock screen). So you have full control over, what app when is active and data sent. That however certain risks for novice users: anyone who prohibited Whatsapp to remain active in the background may not wonder that new messages arrive only if the display has been enabled.

Feathers can be had to the P8 in the laboratory. The battery life is a disappointment – and this must be said here so far -. Firstly, because the P8 with 5:58 hours in the defined connect use mix, partly very clearly behind the current top models of competition remains. The Galaxy S6 creates, for example 7:30 hours. On the other hand, because the P8 cuts off too much worse than the predecessor Ascend P7 (Test), with 6:54 hours nearly an hour longer last – and that has increased although Huawei the capacity of the battery in the successor of 2500 mAh mAh on 2680. With the P8, the users just as the day comes – that is simply too little for a flagship in the year 2015.

Radio characteristics

Looking forward we expect also the measurements in the high-frequency Chamber, because the question was in the room: manages Huawei with his expertise as a network equipment manufacturer to build a Smartphone that has good wireless properties despite aluminium housing with the Bank? Unfortunately not, the Chinese do magic. If the results are very similar as in the full metal cars one M9 by HTC: the GSM reception schw√§chelt clearly, in the more important for the telephony UMTS network’s but enough for the note “good”. And the LTE reception is optimized so far that the P8 reached almost the full number of points. All in all a good, but not outstanding performance.

Conclusion: Strong alternative despite weaknesses

The deficits in the GSM network and the stamina cost valuable points, so that the P8 on the leaderboard behind the previous lands Ascend P7. Huawei’s new flagship deserves a recommendation but, because the Chinese offer a quality that can be found only in the much more expensive top smartphones of the major brands in some areas.

The camera, which can well compete with iPhone 6 and Galaxy S6 comes first. Also design, feel and processing are top class. Therefore, the P8 despite the weaknesses is a strong alternative to the champions of Apple and Samsung.
