Cycle Definition and Meaning

What is Cycle?

Cycle is the period of time in which a set of events, stages or phenomena develop or happen that, once completed, are repeated in the same order from beginning to end.

The word cycle derives from the Latin cyclus, and this in turn from the Greek kyklus which means “circle or wheel”.

Cycle is a word that has a widespread use and can be used in different topics or areas depending on what you want to publicize or relate.

There are various cycles that, based on their characteristics, order of events, duration and repetition, are studied in various areas in order to understand the operation of many of the natural, economic, cultural and social phenomena, among others.

Natural cycles

In nature there are various cycles that expose how life develops and a set of natural phenomena that are indispensable on planet Earth.

For example, the life cycle is one of the most important and studied in the field of science. In this cycle you can project, for example, how in a given period a plant is born, develops, bears fruit, dies and is reborn thanks to the seeds left, and thus continue with the cycle.

Other cycles that are also vital in nature are biogeochemical cycles, since through them a series of natural phenomena occur that are indispensable for life on Earth.

Also worth mentioning is the female sexual cycle, which includes a series of hormonal changes that occur regularly every 28 days in the female reproductive system and that make menstruation or pregnancy possible.

Economic cycle

The economic cycle refers to the different situations and oscillations through which the economy of a country or region passes, and which is characteristic of the capitalist economic model.

This cycle usually takes place in four phases. The first is the rise and economic boom, that is, a lot of productivity and marketing.

It is followed by a decline or recession, which is characterized by a drop in productive activity, an increase in unemployment and little investment.

Next, the third phase occurs, in which the crisis worsens and the economic depression is generated. To conclude, recovery and reactivation appear in the last phase, at which time the economy gradually overcomes the crisis and begins its expansion.

The production cycles that start from the development, elaboration, distribution and sale of a good or service can also be included.

Cardiac cycle

The cardiac cycle is a process through which electrical, mechanical, and pressure changes are made, related to blood flow, contraction, and relaxation in the heart chambers, as well as the opening and closing of the heart valves.

This occurs quickly and its duration reflects the cycle of the heart rate or heartbeat, for each minute.

Circadian cycle

The circadian cycle refers to the order in which a set of variables or biological rhythms happen repeatedly and in a determined period.

Circadian cycles occur in both animals and plants and can occur between every 20 to 24 hours, as is the case with light and temperature cycles.

For example, the human circadian cycle is approximately 24 hours, therefore, when an alteration occurs in this cycle, a disorder is caused in the person that can even generate general discomfort.

Cycle in physics

In physics a cycle refers to the complete oscillation of a movement or wave that occurs periodically. It can also indicate the thermodynamic transformations to which a substance is subjected.

Rock cycle

The rock cycle is part of a set of geological processes through which three main types of rocks are formed: igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks and metamorphic rocks.

The rocks are constantly undergoing changes and transforming through time, so this is a continuous cycle that does not stop on the planet.

Cultural cycle

The cultural cycle refers to the set of activities of a cultural nature that are related thematically and that are usually carried out at a certain time. For example, it is common to see in the list of activities of various cultural centers literary cycles, cinema cycles, theater cycles, exhibition cycles, among others.

In these cycles, a series of conferences on artistic works that are related by their authors, times, themes, historical events, cultural and social movements, among others, are usually exhibited and offered to the public.

For its part, in literature there are also literary cycles, which are those literary works that bring together the same events, heroes, themes and characteristics of a period.

For example, “in the Municipal Library they will be presenting a cycle on contemporary Latin American Literature.”

Study cycles

The study cycles refer to the blocks into which the study plan courses are divided. For example, the basic cycle (primary) and the diversified cycle (high school or high school).
